| 内容記述 | The government and MEXT have recently revised their strategies for admitting international students. The "100,000 International Students Plan" in 1983 focused on aiding human resource development in developing countries, leading Japanese universities to accept many international students primarily from Asia, with the aim of benefiting their home countries. In contrast, the "300,000 International Students Plan" introduced i n 2008 aimed for international students to find employment in Japan, contributing to the countries’ economic development. This shift was driven by factors such as a declining birthrate and economic stagnation, which reduced the working population. By 2019, the total number of international students exceeded 300,000, but only a fraction were enrolled in universities, with a significant portion being non-regular students like exchange students interested in Japanese culture. However, these students often struggle to find employment in Japan. MEXT is now focused on enhancing the quality of international students by addressing issues like the increasing number of students with low Japanese proficiency and non-regular students. The goal is to attract and retain international talent, making studying and working in Japan an appealing career path. | |||||||||||
